Mijpe (Mirjam Emeralda Pekelder van de Pijpekamp), visual artist, creates abstract paintings utilizing mixed media in acrylic paint. The paintings are characterised by an external appearance of spontaneity and impulsiveness with a deep inner stratification. Strong compositions with structure, partly removed layers of paint and scratches. The influence of her years of residence in the Kingdom of Bhutan high in the Himalayas and among primitive native American tribes in North America and Mexico are reflected in her work, which, however, never translates into a suggestive figurative expression. In conjunction with the simplicity, she seems to appeal to the heart of life, through which her paintings radiate and inner strength and tranquility. Paintings on linen, sometimes without frame, or wooden panels, from which the paint seems to fly. Other times restrained, almost spiritual. Mijpe continues to extend her boundaries. From the beginning of her career, Mijpe has always been touched and inspired by poverty and justice issues around the world. Her residencies in the developing world as well as her frequent project visits have created a drive in her to communicate her observations through her art. She translates impressions and themes into abstract paintings, thereby deeply moving the audiences. Examples of such thematic paintings over the years are Enduring Freedom (on children in poverty), Sacred Love (on global institutions), Marumba (on Rwanda), Summit (on politics), My New House (Bosnia), Le Mur (the wall in the West Bank), Water (Birma) and a series on Fair Trade. These deeper layers of her work form an indispensible element of her work and drive, although not always distinctly present for the viewer. She aims for more than creating art for beauty. She considers it her calling to communicate a message of hope, justice and change for the world and thereby create awareness among the viewers. Art professionals refer to Mijpe's compositions as very strong. In the end of 2007, her first art book titled "7 eyes" came off the press. Mijpe has also been nominated for artists of the year 2007 and 2009. She also won the public prize for the ArtEvent in Arnhem. Since 2005, she works in her studio "de Koepel van Stoop, a 19th century tea house in the forests of the "Den Treek Henschoten" estate. Her work can be viewed here during the regular "open studios" (see agenda) or by appointment.
